Located on Pa Thon Road, Khum Khun Phaen is a prime example of traditional Thai architecture from the central region, specifically showcasing the style of a nobleman's house from ancient times. Originally, it served as the residence of the governor of the Old Capital Province. Khum Khun Phaen is situated in the city of Ayutthaya, close to Wat Mongkol Bophit. The structure was built to preserve the homes of nobility from earlier eras for future generations to study ancient architectural styles. Originally designed as the residence of the governor in the Old Capital Province, it was constructed in 1894 by Major General Phra Chao Borom Wong Thoe Krom Khun Marupong Siriphat on an island by the Salt Bridge opposite the provincial office. Around 1940, statesman Pridi Banomyong relocated this residence to the site of the Old Municipal Prison of Ayutthaya, and in 1956, he added more traditional Thai houses and named this collection Khum Khun Phaen. It is believed that Khun Phaen, a legendary figure, was once imprisoned in this very location. Khum Khun Phaen is a traditional Thai house ensemble, beautifully set in the historical district, just south of the Viharn of Wat Mongkol Bophit, facing both Si Sanphet and Pa Thong Roads in Pratu Chai Subdistrict. The structure features steeply pitched gable roofs that facilitate heat ventilation. The complex consists of several structures known as "Hao," with the central hall as the focal point, flanked by sitting halls or front halls—smaller houses situated at the front. To the north lies the left hall, to the south the right hall, and to the west the main hall. Each hall serves a different function. To reach Khum Khun Phaen from Bangkok, enter the city of Ayutthaya, cross the King Naresuan Bridge, and continue straight until you reach the old provincial hall where you will find a junction. Turn right, and not far along you will see Khum Khun Phaen on your left. The site is open for visitors daily from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. For anyone visiting the ancient city of Ayutthaya and captivated by its rich heritage, Khum Khun Phaen offers a wonderful opportunity to immerse oneself in the atmosphere of ancient Thai life and visualize how people lived in the past. This traditional architectural style is becoming increasingly rare, making it a valuable experience for visitors.
