Phra That Chedi Si Pho Thong (Wat Tha It)

Ang Thong, Pho Thong

Around the year 1992 (Buddhist Era 2535), Phra Khru Sukonthasila Kun (Luang Pho Hom Panyapalo) conceived the idea of constructing a stupa at Wat Tha It. Measuring 40 meters in width and 72 meters in height, this stupa was intended to replace the dilapidated structure located in front of the sacred assembly hall (ubosot) and to house the relics of the Buddha, as well as statues of the Buddha in various poses, as treasures of the religion. This endeavor aimed to honor the grace of the Buddha — his wisdom, purity, and great compassion in teaching beings through moral conduct, meditation, and wisdom. Later, around 1995 (Buddhist Era 2538), Phra Khru Sukonthasila Kun learned of the ailing health of His Majesty the King at the time when construction of the stupa was beginning. Out of deep concern for the King's well-being, Luang Pho Hom made a solemn vow, praying for the King’s recovery from illness. He promised that if his prayers were fulfilled, he would construct the stupa in dedication to the King. Ultimately, His Majesty graciously bestowed the name "Phra That Chedi Si Bodhithong" upon this magnificent stupa. Wat Tha It is located in Ban Tha It, Bang Phlap Sub-district, along Highway 3064 at kilometers 7-8. The temple was established in 1761 (Buddhist Era 2304) at a site believed to have originally served as a brick kiln used for constructing Wat Khun Inthapramun, making it a significant brick transport site. After the temple was built, it was named Wat Tha It. The principal Buddha statue in the ubosot is affectionately called “Luang Pho Phet” by the local residents, while the principal Buddha statue in the vihara is referred to as “Luang Pho Khao.” These are statues dating back to the Ayutthaya period, created over 200 years ago, and are housed in the Maha Uth vihara. Upon entering the temple, visitors can admire the striking golden Phra That Chedi Si Bodhithong, which stands out with its brilliant hue.
