Wat Klang Wiang, or Wat Jantharalok, is a temple and historical site located in Chiang Rai province. It houses the original stupa of Chiang Rai. The significance of Wat Klang Wiang is not only its beautiful architecture and central location in Chiang Rai, but also the fact that it contains the stupa—the central pillar of the city—within its grounds. Originally named Wat Jantharalok, this temple was established in 1875. The name is derived from a large red sandalwood tree that naturally grew within the temple grounds. This red sandalwood tree was considered an auspicious wood in ancient traditions. However, over time, the tree eventually fell. Moreover, during the second establishment of Chiang Rai city in 1874, measurements taken from the four corners of the city revealed that the center of Chiang Rai is precisely at Wat Jantharalok. Consequently, the temple’s name was changed to Wat Klang Wiang from that point onward.
