Wat Chom Jang, or Phra That Chom Jang, is located to the east of Mae Sareang district, in Moo 1, Ban Chom Jang, Tambon Mae Sareang, Mae Hong Son Province. It is conveniently situated at the entrance to Mae Sareang, close to the Mae Sareang District Museum and adjacent to Highway 108 (Chiang Mai - Mae Sareang - Mae Hong Son). Visitors can easily access this area via a left turn into the district, right next to the junction for Wat Phra That Chom Tong. Reflecting the Lanna architectural style, Wat Phra That Chom Jang features a captivating blend of intricate designs. It stands as a sacred monument for the people of Mae Sareang, with its stunning stupa being a focal point of beauty and tranquility. The temple offers breathtaking views, especially during sunset when the scenery is exceptionally picturesque. Surrounding the temple, there are viewpoints looking eastward, revealing vistas of rice fields and local homes, encapsulating the charming rural lifestyle of Mae Sareang. The stupa at Wat Chom Jang houses relics of the Buddha, including hair relics. It was built by four siblings who were hermits around the year 1000 AD, to provide the people of the Yuam area a place for reverence and worship. This stupa serves as a protective symbol for the district. Within the ubosot (ordination hall), alongside the principal Buddha image, there is also a beautifully adorned statue of Prince Siddhartha. The walls of the hall are adorned with scenes depicting the Jataka tales, particularly the Vessantara Jataka, which narrates episodes from the life of the Buddha. Additionally, at the base of the stupa lies a stone slab bearing the handprint of Taa, or Kruba Chaiwongsa, which devotees honor and venerate. Interestingly, there are multiple locations named Phra That Chom Jang across Thailand, such as in Phrae Province, and even internationally, including in Myanmar, demonstrating that it is not exclusive to Mae Hong Son Province.
