Wat Phra That Doi Kham

Wat Phra That Doi Kham

Suthep Subdistrict, Mueang Chianger Mai District

Wat Phra That Doi Kham was built during the reign of Queen Chama Devi, the monarch of Haripunjaya, by her two sons in the year 1230 B.E. It consists of a stupa housing the relics of the Buddha, a sermon hall, monk’s quarters, and stucco Buddha images. Originally named Wat Suwannabunpot, the locals commonly refer to it as "Wat Doi Kham." In 1966, at the time Wat Doi Kham had fallen into disrepair. However, following a landslide, villagers discovered several ancient artifacts, including a large gilded sandstone Buddha, Phra Rod Luang, and Phra Samor (clay statuette), which were later enshrined at Wat Phra That Doi Kham. Besides being a place of worship for locals, Doi Kham also serves as a significant visual landmark for Thai Airways pilots when approaching for landing at Chiang Mai Airport. **Legend** The Doi Thong Chai mountain range, located to the west, is home to two important and ancient stupas that are emblematic of Chiang Mai. Each stupa was constructed by a monarch during the Haripunjaya and Lanna periods. One of these is Phra That Doi Kham, situated on a small hill approximately 200 meters above sea level, in the southwest of Chiang Mai city. Previously, this site was said to be inhabited by a giant couple named Jikham and Ta Khiao, who are later referred to by villagers as "Poo Sa" and "Yaa Sa." Poo Sa and Yaa Sa had one child, named “Suthewaris,” and the name Doi Kham originated from a prophetic vision they received when they were bestowed a strand of the Buddha’s hair. Following a significant rainstorm that lasted several days, heavy rainfall washed down gold ore from the hillside, leading to the naming of this mountain as “Doi Kham.” According to various legends, deities brought the Buddha’s hair relics given to Poo Sa and Yaa Sa to be buried and enshrined at this mountain. Later, in 1230 B.E., Prince Mahantayos and Prince Anantayos, the twin sons of Queen Chama Devi from the city of Haripunjaya, ascended the mountain to construct a stupa to enshrine the sacred relics. The second stupa is located atop a higher mountain to the north of Doi Kham, known as Phra That Doi Suthep.
