According to legend, the Buddha along with his disciple Ananda traveled from the Jetavana Monastery along the Mekong River. They visited several sacred sites including Phra Buddha Bhat Bua Bok, Phra Buddha Bhat Phon Phle, Phra Buddha Bhat Wien Pla, and Phu Kam Phra, where the Pha That Phanom stupa is located. They also stopped at the Phra Buddha Bhat at Phu Nam Lot in Chong Chum and the footprints of the Buddha known as Gakusanda, Konakamana, and Kasyapa. When King Suwannaphinkara learned of their journey, he went out to welcome them, accompanied by Queen Narai Chengweng. The Buddha displayed a miracle, causing three radiant gemstones to spring forth simultaneously from his mouth. The king, witnessing this wonder, was filled with faith and joyfully exclaimed blessings. The Buddha proclaimed that this place is a sacred site where the footprints of the four Buddhas would converge, serving as a sanctuary for both deities and humans. Overcome with joy, King Suwannaphinkara removed his golden crown and placed it as an offering on the Buddha’s footprint, subsequently creating a stupa to enshrine it. This is how the site came to be known as Phra That Chong Chum. In Lao history, during the reign of King Chaiyachayathiraj of the city of Sattanakhanhuth in Lan Chang, the stupa was referred to as Phra That Nong Han.
