Wat Phra Nang Sang

148 Moo 1 Thepkrasattri Road, Thepkrasattri, Thalang

The historical narrative of Phuket is rich with stories, particularly at Wat Phra Nang Sang, which has become one of the province’s key attractions that should not be overlooked. This temple was established around the year 1758 and had once served as a military camp in the battle against the Burmese in 1785. Within its ancient ubosot, you can find the three oldest and largest bronze Buddha statues in the world, known as "Phra in Phung" or "Phra Sam Kasat." These statues are housed within the belly of a larger bronze Buddha statue. Near the entrance of the ubosot, visitors can also see the preserved body of Phra Phra Seum (also known as Luang Por Bai) in a glass case, remarkably remaining intact and uncorrupted, which is truly astonishing. Wat Phra Nang Sang is intertwined with the legend of Nang Lueak Khao from Nakhon Si Thammarat. According to the tale passed down through generations, Nang Lueak Khao, the wife of the city’s lord, was falsely accused by a minister of having an affair with a palace guard, leading to a death penalty sentence. The princess negotiated for a delay, requesting a chance to pay homage to the Buddha relics in Sri Lanka before returning to face her punishment. On her way back, she stopped in Thalang, on Phuket Island, where she built a temple before ultimately returning to accept her fate. A miracle occurred during her return; instead of blood flowing red, it flowed white, creating a path and astonishing everyone around. This led to her being titled "Phra Nang Lueak Khao," and the temple she built became known as Wat Phra Nang Sang, a name that endures to this day. Location: The temple is located 20 kilometers from the city center along Thepkrasattri Road, turning left at the intersection near Thalang District; it is situated on the left side. It is accessible by car and is approximately 20 kilometers from Phuket Town, heading north towards Thalang.
