Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm, commonly known as Wat Pho, is an important royal monastery classified as a first-class royal monastery and serves as the temple for King Rama I, Phra Bat Somdet Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok. It is also regarded as the first university in Thailand because it serves as a repository for numerous inscriptions covering various branches of knowledge. UNESCO has recognized it as a Memory of the World Register for the Asia-Pacific region. Historical evidence inscribed on stone tablets indicates that after King Rama I established the Grand Palace, he envisioned two ancient temples flanking it: Wat Salaek (now Wat Mahathat) to the north and Wat Phoraram to the south. Thus, he graciously commanded the official in charge, Chao Trai, to oversee the restoration and reconstruction, which began in the year 1788. The renovation took 7 years, 5 months, and 28 days to complete, followed by a grand celebration in 1841. King Rama I then bestowed the new name “Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklaravihara,” which later, during the reign of King Rama IV, was changed to “Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm.”
