At the top lies the sacred footprint known as Phra Buddha Bat Yonokpure, which visitors must ascend over 3,790 steps to reach. It is said that this is the original and oldest Buddha footprint in all of Siam. Nowadays, the pathway is equipped with handrails, making it easier to navigate, especially during the evening or at night when festivals take place. During regular days without events, visitors can hike up every day until 5 PM. According to history, it is told that the giant Thao Kokkhanak, the last of his kind who refused to surrender to Rama from the epic Ramakien, was struck by an arrow from Rama and was sent flying across the Indian Ocean to land atop this mountain. Rama then cursed the arrow to remain embedded in his chest, stating that should it ever shift, Hanuman, son of the wind, would come with a hammer to drive it back in. Despite being wounded so gravely, the giant did not perish. His daughter, Nang Nongprachan, flew after him to care for her father. Thao Kokkhanak could do nothing but lie in the cave atop this mountain. Later, when she learned that vinegar from their mother could release the arrow, she realized that if the arrow shifted, a rooster would crow, summoning Hanuman to drive the arrow in again. This is why the city of Lopburi has not sold vinegar for a long time. From this legend, the mountain came to be known as Khao Nongprachan or Nang Prachan. Later, in 1953, Luang Por Opasi climbed this mountain and observed that the area was shaped like a crescent with a full encirclement visible from any side. He then named it "Khao Wong Prachan," a moniker that has endured ever since.
