The Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, also known as the Snake Farm, was established in 1922 with the mission to serve the nation, advance science, and benefit humanity, as envisioned by King Rama VI, who founded the institute. Initially, it focused on producing vaccines for rabies, and later expanded its production to include antivenoms, rabies serums, and other vaccines for various diseases. The institute also engages in research on poisonous animals and plants. Today, the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute provides education and services to the public about rabies and venomous snakes. Its production meets high-quality standards in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and the international standards of the World Health Organization (WHO), gaining both national and international recognition. The institute's main missions include: 1. Producing and supplying vaccines, serums, and other biological materials, as well as sterile solutions. 2. Conducting research and offering scientific services. 3. Providing rabies-related services, including advice on venomous animal bites and tropical diseases, and administering vaccinations to the public. Currently, the Snake Farm attracts interest from the general public, students, and international tourists who are eager to learn more about snakes. The institute offers academic expertise about snakes to ensure a proper understanding that can be applied practically in daily life. Visitors can explore the "Snake Farm," which not only provides educational insights but also includes entertainment features such as snake exhibits and live demonstrations of snake-catching and venom extraction. The Thai Tourism Authority promotes the Snake Farm as a notable tourist attraction both nationally and internationally. Its achievements have been highlighted in esteemed publications like National Geographic and featured in international travel magazines, documentaries, and television programs. Moreover, the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute houses several other interesting facilities: - A rabies diagnostic and research clinic that provides general knowledge on rabies and serves as a testing center. - A rabies prevention clinic that offers consultation and vaccinations for animal bites and provides training for medical personnel on rabies management. - A travel medicine and immunization clinic providing vaccinations for various diseases to both Thai citizens and international tourists, along with travel-related health advice. - A wildlife venom clinic that addresses cases of venom exposure from bites and stings in Thailand, a country known for its diverse poisonous species due to its tropical climate. Overall, the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute stands as an educational hub and a crucial service provider in the fields of public health, wildlife conservation, and scientific research.
