"Paying homage to King Naresuan: A journey back to the Khao Ku Muang Watthana camp." The statue of King Naresuan the Great stands majestically in Watthanakhun District. During his time as the Vice-King, King Naresuan displayed remarkable leadership in military affairs to protect the kingdom, particularly on the eastern frontier. He led troops to quell enemies who repeatedly invaded and raided the border areas. In 1581, he first mobilized his forces to suppress these aggressors. The following year, in 1582, he ordered the establishment of the Khao Ku Muang camp, setting up rice granaries at the camp of Phra Thamnob (now in the Watthanakhun District). In that year, he successfully defeated the enemy decisively. In recognition of his immense contributions, the Sa Kaeo Province erected a statue of King Naresuan, depicted standing with a sword raised above his head, symbolizing his power to protect his subjects. Standing at 2.80 meters tall, the statue represents his enduring legacy. Every January, the province hosts a ceremony in honor of King Naresuan. In addition to the offerings by military units, police, and the public, there are also traditional Thai combat demonstrations during the evening, showcasing skills with bare hands, spears, swords, and the continuation of traditional dances performed by young women from Sa Kaeo. Not only do local leaders, government officials, employees, students, and citizens participate, but there are also various forms of entertainment held each night to commemorate this significant event.
