Doi Wawee Coffee

Doi Wawee Coffee

Wawi Subdistrict, Mae Suai District.

Doi Wawee is located in Moo 1, Wawee Subdistrict, Mae Saruay District. It is a large village of the Akha ethnic group. One of the unique charms of Doi Wawee that captivates visitors is its enchanting "tea," which the locals cultivate as a primary occupation. This area has been inhabited by the Akha and Yunnan Chinese communities since the time of the 93rd Division in Doi Mae Salong, which is also renowned for its tea. As a result, tea cultivation has flourished here. The tea grown on Doi Wawee includes indigenous varieties such as "Assam," as well as Taiwanese varieties like Ching Ching Numbers 12 and 13, along with "Oolong" tea, which is particularly noteworthy. Doi Wawee is recognized as the first region in Thailand to cultivate Oolong tea, thanks to Uncle Pankor Pinitch Pitakwari, a man in his sixties who fell in love with the flavor of Oolong tea, leading him to secretly smuggle high-quality Oolong tea plants into Thailand. After eight years of trial and error, he succeeded in developing a uniquely Thai Oolong tea that rivals even the best Oolong teas from Taiwan. However, the wonders of Doi Wawee do not stop there. The mountain is home to 13 different ethnic groups, including the Akha (the most populous), Muser, Lisu, Yao, Karen, Yunnan Chinese, and others, each contributing distinctive cultures and traditions in terms of attire, housing, and languages. Yet, despite these differences, the people of Doi Wawee live together in harmony amid the surrounding mountains and nature. 1. **Tea Plantation Tours and Tasting** In addition to the opportunity to sample and shop for tea (available at various tea shops), Doi Wawee also boasts picturesque tea plantations. Apart from the terraced tea fields cultivated by locals on the hillside, Doi Wawee is home to a remarkable "Thousand-Year-Old Tea Tree" located in Ban Mai Development, which has become a tourist attraction. This ancient tree has a girth of 150 centimeters and stands 20 meters tall, representing a naturally occurring Assam tea variety that has thrived in Doi Wawee for generations. Locals often use its leaves to make "Miang," a refreshing traditional snack. 2. **Doi Lali** To reach Doi Lali, take the Rural Road to Ban Mai Mok Jaam and continue for another 4 kilometers past Ban Wawee on a dirt road that runs through tea plantations. Doi Lali is a small hill with an elevation of approximately 1,300 meters above sea level, home to Lali Resort, the only accommodation in the Doi Wawee area. Doi Lali is named after a former soldier from the 93rd Division who cleared the land in the valley and the surrounding hills about 4 kilometers from Ban Wawee to establish tea plantations. This area features beautifully terraced tea fields with stunning scenery. **Accommodation: Lali Resort,** No. 15, Moo 20, Wawee Subdistrict, Mae Saruay District, Chiang Rai, 57180. During the winter, visitors can witness cool weather and a breathtaking mist forming in the valley below. The scenery here is as beautiful as that found at Phu Chi Fa, although access can be quite rugged, requiring nearly 20 kilometers of travel. The most convenient way to experience Doi Kad Phee is to contact Lali Resort, which offers one-day tours to view the sea of mist at Doi Kad Phee and the tea plantations nestled in the valley during winter. The route to Doi Kad Phee passes through villages of the Akha and Yao people, who diligently maintain their traditional customs and practices.
