Mae Kha Canal

Rakang Road, Chang Klan Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai District.

The Mae Kha Canal in Chiang Mai is an ancient waterway that appears in local legends. It was chosen by King Mangrai as the site for founding Chiang Mai in 1839. Historically, the Mae Kha Canal was of great significance, serving as a moat that helped protect the city. It was also a crucial water source for agriculture, consumption, and an essential route for waterborne transport. Recently, efforts have been made to rehabilitate the canal by using aquatic plants to purify wastewater, hiring caretakers, and beautifying the landscape. This transformation has turned the area into a recreational space for exercise and leisurely walks. Both banks of the canal have been beautifully lined with concrete blocks, creating a stunning resemblance to the Otaru Canal in Japan.
