Mor Hom, the name of the indigo-dyed fabric, has long been a source of pride for the city of Phrae. This unique fabric represents the vibrant cultural heritage of the Phrae people, reflecting their ethnic identity and the history that has been passed down through generations. The traditional attire of the Phrae locals prominently features Mor Hom fabric, showcasing the distinctive style of this region. Men typically wear round-necked, short-sleeved shirts made of Mor Hom, often buttoned or tied at the chest, resembling the traditional Chinese Kuiheng shirt. They pair these with Mor Hom trousers that are cinched at the waist with a fabric made from cotton dyed with indigo derived from either the Mor Hom or indigo plant, resulting in a uniform color throughout the fabric. Phrae is renowned for its production of Mor Hom fabric, with three primary sources: Ban Phra Luang, Ban Wiang Thong, and Ban Thung Hong. The fame of Mor Hom from Phrae has spread across the country, leading to the saying, “Anyone who visits Phrae must buy Mor Hom.” Ban Thung Hong, located within the city of Phrae, is considered the largest and most renowned center for Mor Hom production. Today, tailoring Mor Hom clothing significantly contributes to the livelihoods and economic status of the villagers, establishing Thung Hong as one of the municipal regions in Phrae with a notable economic standing. As you enter the city of Phrae and pass through Ban Thung Hong, you'll encounter Mor Hom Street, which boasts countless shops selling Mor Hom products along both sides of the road for over 4 kilometers. Here, you can find a diverse range of items, from clothing and bags to various souvenirs made from Mor Hom fabric, featuring designs from traditional to modern styles—all available at affordable prices.
