Saphan Han is a small bridge located in the Sampeng area of the Chakkrawat Sub-district, Samphanthawong District. It spans across the canal that surrounds the city, also known as Khlong Ong Ang. The name "Saphan Han" reflects the original design of the bridge, which was once a simple wooden plank laid across the canal. One end was firmly anchored while the other was left free to pivot, allowing boats to pass through. Later, during the reign of King Rama IV, the bridge was reconstructed using a steel frame with a wooden deck. By the time of King Rama V, its design was transformed to resemble the Rialto Bridge in Venice and the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy. This new design featured a wide, arched wooden structure with small shops lining both sides for rental, and a central walkway for pedestrians. The current bridge we see today was rebuilt in 1962 to replace the original structure, which had become dilapidated over time.
