Sam Chong House

Kalay Takuathung

Sam Chong Village is uniquely situated by three canals flowing north of the village: Bang Lam Canal, Chiang Mai Canal, and Ta Jo Canal, collectively known as "Three Canals." This divides the community into two sections: on one side, named "Sam Chong South," there are over 100 households, while the other side lies on an island in the sea, called "Sam Chong North," housing more than 250 families. Both villages share natural resources for their livelihoods. The scenic landscape visible from both villages includes the majestic Phra Aad Thao Mountain and lush green mangrove forests surrounding the area. Beyond, the sunlight glimmers against the mist hovering over the water, revealing a sandbank filled with shells that emerges during low tide. Visitors can enjoy a long-tail boat ride to witness the sunrise at the mouth of Phang Nga Bay, partake in local fishing activities, explore the mud crab conservation area, and paddle canoes or kayaks through the mangrove forest. They can also visit the “Sapphire Coral Cave,” where sparkling stalactites and stalagmites glisten like diamonds. An intriguing highlight is the “Miracle of the Tree of Love,” featuring two black mangrove trees standing together in the sea, each over 70 years old, submerged underwater for 6-8 hours a day, only to reveal themselves during low tide. Within the village, numerous activities await, including insights into the coastal community's way of life, visiting a crab bank, observing the farming of sea bass in nets, and oyster and mussel cultivation. Guests can try their hand at collecting clams, dyeing fabrics using tie-dye techniques mixed with batik, and indulging in local southern cuisine, such as boiled duck clams served with spicy sauce and creamy “Kai Gan” curry made with “Yod Paeng” vegetable, along with local snacks like “Kanom Suea Kluk,” “Kanom Jaak,” and “Kanom Piek.” Visitors can also enjoy sunsets and stay overnight at a homestay. Locally produced goods available for purchase as souvenirs include soap made from fish gills, processed seafood, and rare mangrove honey. **Travel Instructions:** From downtown Phang Nga, drive to Ka Lai District in Takua Thung, then, at the Sam Chong traffic lights, turn right into a lane. Drive straight to the mangrove research station, then turn left and continue for another 3 kilometers to reach Sam Chong South. From there, take a boat from Sam Chong pier, which is about a 5-minute ride to Sam Chong North pier, with a fare of 20 baht per person.
