The distinctive feature of Tai Lue houses is that they are constructed without using nails. They are made from teak, hardwood, and rattan, with staircases designed to have an odd number of steps, typically seven or nine. Having an even number of steps is considered inauspicious, as it is believed to represent a house for the deceased. The interior layout of the house is quite simple. The space beneath serves as the undercroft, and above that, there is a small area for planting vegetables. This elevated section includes seating for relaxation and a small corner with a fire pit for cooking. The bedrooms are located on the eastern side of the house and are regarded as private spaces. No outsiders are allowed in without the homeowner's permission. Additionally, there are curtains separating the bedroom as per tradition, with colors restricted to white, red, or floral patterns. Interestingly, in Tai Lue culture, windows are referred to as "Pratu Pong," which denotes a sliding-door style window.
