The original name of the temple is Wat Aphai or Wat Tung Kradang. According to legend, when Phaya Aphai fell ill and various treatments failed to ease his suffering, he made a heartfelt prayer before the image of the Buddha to the Lord of Relief, asking for his ailment to subside. Miraculously, his illness vanished instantly. Following this miraculous recovery, Phaya Aphai instructed his descendants and followers to establish their homes nearby and to restore the temple, which he then named "Wat Dab Phai" or "Temple of Relief."
