Wat Bang Chang Nuea

Anamai Don Thong Alley, Moo 3, Khlong Mai Subdistrict, Sam Phran District.

Located at 97/1 Moo 3, Klong Mai Sub-district, Sam Phran District, Nakhon Pathom Province, with a postal code of 73110, and a contact number of 034-325520, Wat Bang Chang Nuea is a Buddhist temple under the Mahānikāya sect. It was established in the year 1835 (according to the information from the Buddhist Affairs Division, Department of Religious Affairs, which issued the temple's certificate of status). The temple received its royal sanction for a boundary on February 3, 1950, with a boundary width of 40 meters and a length of 80 meters. Wat Bang Chang Nuea encompasses approximately 60 rai of land, with the Ta Chin River flowing in front of the temple. Originally known as "Wat Mai," it was named according to historical customs, believed to be linked to the name of the canal, as a new canal was dug to supply water for local rice farming. Thus, it became known as "Wat Mai," which also aligns with its designation in land documents, referring to the area as Klong Mai Bang Chang. The temple can be considered as situated between the Klong Mai and Klong Bang Chang canals. According to local oral tradition, the change from the original name to Wat Bang Chang Nuea occurred around 1916, although there is no concrete evidence. At that time, His Holiness Chao Khun Phra Maha Somdej Chao Yuhua Vajirantha visited various temples by boat along the Ta Chin River. Upon reaching the temple, he inquired of his companions, “What is the name of this temple?” They replied, “Wat Mai.” He then continued to the mouth of the Bang Chang canal and asked, “What is the name of this canal?” They responded, “Bang Chang Canal.” He further queried, “What is the name of the temple on the opposite side?” The reply was “Wat Bang Chang.” His Holiness then stated, “Bang Chang Canal is in the middle while Wat Mai is to the north; it should appropriately be named Wat Bang Chang Nuea. As for Wat Bang Chang along the river to the south, let it be named Wat Bang Chang Tai.” Henceforth, it has been known as Wat Bang Chang Nuea to this day.
