Bang Pra Temple is an ancient temple with no recorded evidence of its founding date. However, it is believed to have been established during the middle Ayutthaya period, around 220 years after the Buddhist era (approximately 1740 AD) based on archaeological evidence, such as the old ubosot (the ordination hall) that features structures and wall paintings characteristic of that era. The Fine Arts Department, specifically the Office of Fine Arts 2 in Suphanburi, conducted archaeological excavations to study the temple’s restoration patterns and methods starting in September 2004 and concluding in May 2006, resulting in new academic insights into the history of Bang Pra Temple. Archaeological evidence indicates that the old ubosot dates back only to the Ayutthaya period. However, it remains unknown who founded it and what its historical background is. Regardless, this gives us an understanding of Bang Pra Temple as a historic site with a legacy spanning over 330 years, serving as a spiritual center for the local community. The temple has received generous support from the local residents over the years. However, the old ubosot was small and cramped, making it difficult for monks to perform religious ceremonies due to the numerous devotees wishing to ordain. Consequently, the abbot at that time, Phra Akkharakhim Intachoto, encouraged both monks and local villagers to construct a new ubosot. They transported timber from the surrounding area — which was said to be a lush forest during that time — to build a large wooden ubosot, one of the largest in the Nakhon Chai Si area, which was completed in 1930. During the tenure of Phra Udom Prachanath (Pen Thitakunho) as the abbot, Bang Pra Temple underwent significant development. He initiated the restoration of the new ubosot, which had deteriorated over time since it was entirely made of wood. He rebuilt the ubosot using concrete and continued to restore and construct various permanent fixtures for the Buddhist community throughout his life. Later on, Phra Khru Anukool Pitsalakit (Samaang Papassaro), the current abbot, followed in the footsteps of his predecessors by continuing the good maintenance and development of the temple. In 2006, he collaborated with the Fine Arts Department to restore the old ubosot, ensuring its preservation in good condition up to the present day.
