Wat Pradu

Wat Pradu Subdistrict, Amphawa District

Wat Pradu is an ancient temple constructed during the late Ayutthaya period. It was once a site where His Majesty King Chulachakra visited by boat along the Chao Phraya River, showcasing his deep faith in Phra Luang Pu Jang, the abbot at that time. The king generously donated royal offerings to Luang Pu Jang, including a boat with a royal pavilion, a royal sleeping platform, and a ceremonial fan bearing his initials, Chulachakra (จ.ป.ร). These items are now preserved in a museum dedicated to royal offerings, which welcomes visitors today. However, the temple offers a variety of interesting features, including: - An ancient Buddha statue from the Ayutthaya period, influenced by the art style of Lan Chang. This statue is made from laterite stone and is approximately 500 years old, serving as the principal image in the old ubosot (ordination hall) of Wat Pradu. - The residence of Somdet Phra Yanasangworn, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand. - A ceiling mural painted with mineral colors from the reign of King Rama II. - A demonstration center for the art of making traditional headgear and teacher figures. - A historical neem tree, a sacred water well, and sculptures crafted from local clay. Notably, Phra Maha Surasak Atisakho, the current abbot, pioneered the first sculptures using Thai clay to create lifelike figures, including a statue of Uea Sunthornsanan and a representation of the famous conjoined twins, In and Chan.
