Wat Prang Luang

Local road No. Wat Amphawan, Bang Yai Subdistrict.

Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya's Wat Prang Luang is believed to have been constructed in 1904 AD during the reign of King Ramathibodi I (King U Thong) of early Ayutthaya. Originally named "Wat Luang," it was later renamed "Wat Prang Luang" by Somdet Phra Mahasamanachao Krom Phra Wajirayan Woras. He was captivated by the prang (bell tower) that was built alongside the temple, inspiring the name change. The temple houses the main Buddha statue within its ubosot (ordination hall), known as "Luang Phor U Thong." This gilded plaster statue, depicting the Buddha in the Mara Vijaya posture, measures 9 "khuap" (about 18 inches) across the lap and is considered highly sacred. Locals often come to pay their respects and venerate this revered statue.
