Wat Chaiwatthanaram is located just outside the city island along the banks of the Chao Phraya River. This temple was built during the reign of King Prasat Thong to dedicate merits to his mother and has been the site for the cremation ceremonies of nearly every king of Ayutthaya. It also serves as a monument commemorating the victory over the Khmer Empire (Phnom Penh) and is modeled after Angkor Wat. One of the most interesting features of the temple is the central prang (tower) that stands at the heart of the site, surrounded by four subordinate prangs. The popularity surge sparked by the hit series "Bupphesanniwat" has led many people, dressed in traditional Thai attire, to flock to Wat Chaiwatthanaram in grand numbers. This temple is part of the Historic City of Ayutthaya and was constructed in the year 1630 AD by King Prasat Thong, perfectly situated along the banks of the Chao Phraya River.
