The Mahasarakham City Pillar Shrine is located along Nakhon Sawan Road, in front of the City Pillar School. It was first established in 1865 when Phra Maha Chai, the first governor of Mahasarakham, gathered people from Roi Et Province to found a new city. The shrine was built to enshrine the city’s guardian spirit, making it a sacred place revered by the local community. It has been a significant site for the people of Mahasarakham for a long time, reflecting their deep respect and veneration for the City Pillar Shrine. The current structure was completed in 1912, originally built of wood. In 1984, it underwent restoration led by the Fine Arts Department to ensure its alignment with ancient traditions. Today, it features a quadrangular building with entrances on all four sides. The central pillar is made from Chai Pruek wood (also known as Kaem Khun wood) intricately carved and adorned with gold leaf. If you find yourself traveling through the Mueang Mahasarakham District, make sure to stop by the Mahasarakham City Pillar Shrine. It offers not just blessings but also a chance for a smooth and safe journey ahead.
