Kuan Yin, also known as the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, is a revered figure in Mahayana Buddhism. She represents compassion and mercy, embodying the qualities that are most aligned with the needs of humanity. The integration of traditional Chinese beliefs led to the emergence of Kuan Yin as a female Bodhisattva, symbolizing gentleness and a deeper manifestation of compassion. The primary mission of a Bodhisattva is to assist all sentient beings in overcoming their physical and emotional suffering, ultimately guiding them towards liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth (samsara). The help provided by a Bodhisattva is filled with love, compassion, and wisdom, offering material aid, forgiveness, and spiritual guidance. This light of hope shines for the desperate, leading the misguided towards a better understanding of the truth. Thus, the role of the Bodhisattva is not only as a teacher but also as a supreme guide for both humans and divine beings. No matter how much good a Bodhisattva does, she understands that everything operates according to its own causes and conditions, independent of her merits. This wisdom allows her to remain humble when facing criticism and not to take pride in her achievements. The essence of being a Bodhisattva lies in the understanding of emptiness—this principle enables her to evade attachment to her own virtuous actions, thus allowing her to maintain a pure heart and mind.
