Krabi Airport

Phetkasem Road, Nuea Khlong Subdistrict, Nuea Khlong District.

Krabi Airport was established during World War II, and locals refer to it as "Khuan Airport." It started as a gravel airstrip situated on a low hill but fell into disuse after the war ended. In 1983, private investors and the Krabi municipality collaborated to build Krabi Airport in the Huai Khlong sub-district, which was completed in 1986. Bangkok Airways, using an 18-seat BANDEIRANTE EMB110 P2 aircraft, launched its inaugural flight on the Bangkok-Krabi route on June 15, 1986; however, this initial effort did not succeed. After approximately three months of operations, the Civil Aviation Department conducted a survey to acquire additional land and completely redesign the airport, with construction beginning in the 1993 fiscal year. The new airport was officially inaugurated on July 10, 1999, attracting a significant number of passengers. In response, a second passenger terminal was constructed, which was completed in 2005, along with an expanded parking area allowing for the simultaneous accommodation of up to four aircraft. As traffic at Krabi Airport continued to grow, the existing facilities became insufficient. The Civil Aviation Authority undertook renovations, transforming the old terminal into an international terminal and separating it from the existing domestic terminal. They installed a jet bridge and created a connection between the terminals, as well as expanded the parking area to accommodate four large aircraft (such as the B747) and six smaller aircraft (like the B737) at the same time. Today, Krabi Airport serves both domestic and international flights, with airlines such as Thai Airways operating the Bangkok-Krabi route, AirAsia servicing flights between Bangkok-Krabi and Kuala Lumpur-Krabi, and Thai Tiger Airways offering routes from Singapore to Krabi. At present, Krabi Airport can accommodate large aircraft such as the Boeing B747 and Airbus A340, marking it as a significant hub for travelers seeking to explore this beautiful region of Thailand.
