Sanam Luang today serves as a park for urban dwellers. In the morning, it is a place for exercise, while in the evening, it transforms into a leisurely space for strolls and city views. This area was established during the reign of King Rama I, who graciously designated the boundaries of the Grand Palace and reserved a trapezoidal space between the Grand Palace and the later royal palace, known as the Borommawongse Palace. This space was intended for the royal cremation ceremonies of kings and members of the royal family, as well as the construction of royal crematoriums. The first crematorium built on this site was for the royal cremation of King Phutthayotfa Chulalok. As a result, the public commonly referred to this area as "Thung Phra Meru." During ceremonies, this location would be bustling with people, but during off times, it would be left abandoned. Later, during the reign of King Rama III, he graciously allowed this area to be used for rice cultivation. By the reign of King Rama IV, he felt that the name “Thung Phra Meru” did not sound appropriate and thus renamed it “Thon Sanam Luang,” a name that has since become widely used. The Sanam Luang area consists of three main sections. The first is the southern section adjacent to the Grand Palace, designated for important royal ceremonies. The second is the northern section, near the Somdet Phin King Bridge, which serves as a public space for relaxation. The final section is the central road, used as an access route for royal processions and for hosting traditional events on significant occasions. Location: It is situated in front of Wat Mahathat Yuwaratrangsarit, between the Grand Palace and the Borommawongse Palace, in the Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok. It is open to visitors from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM. As for exploring the Sathon District, enjoy the religious and spiritual hubs, breathe in the fresh air among the urban greenery of “Bangkok’s Forest,” and embark on an adventure through the wall art of the Charoen Krung area, historical national monuments, military museums, and places of remembrance dedicated to those who sacrificed so much.
