Originally the site of the Bangkok Special Prison, often referred to as the "Giant Punishment Prison" or "New Prison," it dates back to the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). This prison adopted the design of the Brixton Prison from Singapore, which is recognized as a high-security facility. In 1991, the Cabinet approved a project to transform the Bang Khen Youth Correctional Institution, or the "Central Prison of Khlong Prem," and transferred inmates from the Bangkok Special Prison to be managed together in one location. Subsequently, the area of the former Bangkok Special Prison was converted into a public park, named "Rommani Nart," as a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit on the occasion of her 60th birthday in 1992. The name "Rommani Nart" translates to "a woman who provides refuge." This public park serves as both a health garden and a soothing space with music for the general public, allowing visitors to unwind from daily stresses. It also offers several attractions worth visiting, such as the "Royal Thai Department Museum," which received an award for conservation excellence from the Association of Siamese Architects under royal patronage in 1997. Located on Maha Chai Road, the museum comprises four buildings: the Criminal Court (showcasing execution tools, penal methods, prison equipment, and escape artifacts), the Corrections Building (displaying history and equipment related to the Bangkok Special Prison and documentation on historical corrections), the Corrections Department Store (selling correctional products and souvenirs), and Building 9 (a former inmate sleeping quarters demonstrating daily life, detention systems, and Western-style architecture). Another notable feature is the "Bronze Conch Sculpture," which is a left-spiraling conch placed on a base made of bronze. Inside, it contains sacred amulets and an actual conch designed to direct water from its mouth into a pond, symbolizing the Queen's gracious heart. Additionally, the "Free Thailand Memorial Museum" showcases exhibitions related to the Free Thai Movement, which played a significant role in Thailand's political landscape. The park is adorned with beautiful flower gardens, ponds, and pavilions where visitors can relax and enjoy the scenic views. Location: Siripong Road, Samranrat Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok. Open daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
