Golden Triangle Park Hall of Opium

212 Moo 1, Wiang, Chiang Saen

The story of opium's development is a captivating subject worth studying. Here, a comprehensive collection of narratives surrounding opium has been curated, covering every aspect from its history in the Golden Triangle, its origins, the Opium Wars, the key figures who introduced opium to Asia, its impacts, and the transition away from a life dependent on opium cultivation and consumption. Furthermore, it addresses the rehabilitation of the communities located in the heart of Thailand's Golden Triangle, a region notorious for its drug trade in the past. The exhibitions are held in a modern, colorful multimedia format that makes learning enjoyable, often making visitors lose track of time. Inside the fascinating Opium Museum, there is the "Tunnel of Darkness," a 137-meter-long passage that cuts through the mountain from the reception building to the main structure, which features a replicated opium field. The main hall presents a simulated opium field alongside basic knowledge about the various strains of poppies, showcasing both ornamental types and those used for opium extraction. The exhibit on opium in Siam includes a recreation of a Chinese tea house located in Yaowarat, detailing the history of opium within Siam. The "Miraculous Time" section illustrates scientific advancements that led to the isolation of morphine and the development of heroin, alongside the detrimental effects of narcotics, showcasing the harms associated with different types of drugs and their societal impacts. Nearby attractions and interesting activities in the Golden Triangle—the junction of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar separated by the Mekong River—include a popular activity for visitors to Chiang Saen: a boat ride on the Mekong River. Notable sites include Wat Phra That Chom Kitti, an ancient pagoda predating the city of Chiang Saen; Wat Phra That Pha Ngao, where the Buddha image is situated on a rock behind the main hall, reminiscent of Myanmar's Kyaiktiyo Pagoda; and Wat Phra That Chedi Luang, a pagoda established during the founding of Chiang Saen. Other remarkable temples include Wat Pa Sak, known for its prominent five-tiered bell-shaped chedi adorned with beautiful stucco work; and Wat Phra Chao Lan Thong, which houses the 1,200-kilogram bronze Buddha statue, Phra Chao Lan Thong. Chiang Saen National Museum consolidates artifacts unearthed from the city and surrounding areas, providing further insight into the region's rich history.
