The Ya Mo Monument, also known as Khunying Mo or Thao Suranari, is located in the heart of Nakhon Ratchasima. It is the first monument dedicated to an ordinary citizen in Thailand and honors a historical heroine who significantly contributed to the nation. She is a figure of pride and respect among the people of Korat, so much so that they often refer to their city as "Muang Ya Mo." During the reign of King Nangklao (Rama III), the royal prince from Vientiane instigated a rebellion by marching an army to attack Nakhon Ratchasima and capturing its citizens as prisoners. At that time, Khunying Mo, the wife of the provincial governor, devised a clever plan to feign fear and gain the favor of the Lao soldiers. When the group of prisoners rested in the fields of Samrit in Phimai district, she seized the opportunity to lead a counterattack with local forces, defeating the Vientiane troops. Her brave actions quickly became legendary, earning her widespread acclaim and recognition throughout the land. In gratitude, King Rama III honored her by granting her the title "Thao Suranari."
