Koh Phayam

Moo 1, Koh Phayam, Ranong Province

The serene beauty of Koh Phayam, one of the two largest islands in the Ranong Sea, is as captivating as the simple lifestyle of the Moken community, known as sea gypsies. Today, they continue to make a living through fishing while also offering boat tours for tourists to explore the stunning views from various spots on the island. A must-visit is "Wat Koh Phayam," located near the pier heading north. Here, visitors can marvel at the temple situated in the sea, crowned with a standing Buddha statue facing the ocean. This iconic landmark can be spotted from far away when approaching the island by boat. Stroll along "Ao Hin Khaw," renowned for its large white rock prominently positioned along the shore. This area is home to "Phra Phu Tai Hin Khaw," a sacred site venerated by locals, steeped in legend, where it is said that the spirit appeared to their ancestors in a dream, urging them to settle here. Immerse yourself in the tranquil atmosphere of various bays, including Ao Mai Phai, Ao Kwang Pib, Laem Hin, and Ao Mook. Don't miss the beauty of Koh Kham, which lies not far from Ao Mook. During low tide, a sandbar emerges, linking the two islands, and locals affectionately refer to Koh Kham as "Koh Pla Waan" due to its whale-like shape. Relax on the sandy shores of Ao Yai, situated in the southwest of the island and considered one of Koh Phayam's highlights. This spacious bay stretches approximately 4 kilometers, revealing a wide sandy beach as the tide recedes. The sand here is soft and fine, consisting of a beautiful blend of yellow and gray grains that create stunning patterns at low tide. The waves at Ao Yai are relatively strong, making it a popular spot for surfing, with various resorts offering surfboard rentals. For nature enthusiasts, Ao Khao Kwai is a long, curved bay stretching about 2 kilometers. Its two ends curve inward, resembling a buffalo's horn, providing a peaceful and serene escape with several accommodation options. During low tide, you'll be greeted by a long stretch of sandy beach. This area is divided into two parts: Ao Khao Kwai North and South, showcasing two distinct sand colors—crisp white and a soft pink, created by abundant pink shells along the shoreline. Notably, Ao Khao Kwai features a unique geological formation known as "Hin Thalu," which is a small rocky hill with a hollowed-out section at the top, allowing visitors to walk through. This spot is particularly popular for photographs, especially as the bay faces west, making it an excellent location for watching the sunset. Traveling to Koh Phayam is convenient via long-tail boats that operate from the island pier at Talat Khao, located next to the local police station in Pak Nam, Ranong. Boats run twice a day at 9:30 AM and 2:00 PM (mail boat) and take about 2 hours to reach the island, costing 200 baht per person. Speedboats are also available at 10:00 AM and 2:30 PM, taking just 40 minutes for 400 baht per person.
