Dong Lakhon Ancient Town

The entrance to the city moat, Dong Lakok subdistrict, Mueang Nakhon Nayok District.

The ancient city of Dong Lakorn is an oval-shaped, nearly round settlement surrounded by a moat and earthworks, covering an area of approximately 3,000 rai (about 1,200 acres) with a diameter of around 700-800 meters. Originally, the city had two layers of earthworks; however, only the outer layer remains today. The outer earthwork is taller than the inner one, yet the inner layer is thicker. This city's design is closely linked to the ancient Nakhon Nayok River, which provided access to the coastline, making it ideal for maritime trade. It also supported agricultural activities in the surrounding areas. This characteristic is similar to other ancient cities from the Dvaravati period located nearby in Thailand. It is estimated that this area was inhabited during the 12th to 18th Buddhist centuries and was part of an extensive maritime trading network in ancient times.
