The Correction Museum is located within Rommani Niwat Park on Mahachai Road, in the Samran Rat district. It occupies a building that was once Thailand's first prison, constructed in 1892 during the reign of King Rama V. While parts of the area have been transformed into a public park, the impressive entrance arches and high walls remain intact. Inside, the museum showcases the history of the Thai correctional system, including exhibits on the prisoner control room, prisoner dormitories, and the original office of the correctional staff. The museum is open from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Admission is free. For more information, you can call 0 2226 1704 or fax 0 2526 9010. Note that group visits require a letter to be sent to the Director-General of the Department of Corrections at least one week in advance. More details can be found at www.correct.go.th/demo/museum/museum1.html.
