Wat Si Chum is located on the outskirts of the ancient city of Sukhothai to the northwest, within the Sukhothai Historical Park in Sukhothai Province. This ancient temple has a rich history, particularly known for its majestic statue of Phra Achana, the steadfast Buddha. This enormous stucco Buddha image, in a seated posture of Mara Vichai, measures approximately 11.3 meters wide and stands about 15 meters tall. Alongside the ubosot (ordination hall), there is a small pathway that allows visitors to access the area behind the Buddha. Speaking from that vantage point creates an astonishing echo throughout the hall, which in ancient times led people to believe that this statue could speak. Legend has it that when King Naresuan set up camp at Wat Si Chum, he noticed his troops were lacking the morale to fight the enemy. To uplift their spirits, he devised a plan for a soldier to climb to the back of the Buddha statue and call out words of encouragement, thus giving rise to the belief that the Buddha could speak. Visiting in the morning or evening offers stunning photo opportunities. The entrance to the ubosot is quite narrow, accommodating only 1-2 people at a time, but inside resides the stunning large Buddha statue, one of the best-preserved within this historical park. Foreign tourists frequently stop by for photographs, and the entrance fee is just 20 baht.
