Originally known as Wat Laem or Wat Sai Thong, it later received its royal name from King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) as Wat Benchamabophit, which translates to "The Temple of the Five Royal Sages" – referring to the five princes who collaborated to restore this temple. When King Chulalongkorn established Dusit Park, he constructed a new temple and named it Wat Benchamabophit Dusit Wanaram, meaning "The Temple of His Majesty, Rama V." In the past, due to its location at the tip of a cape adjoining rice fields, it was also known as Wat Laem. Moreover, the presence of a banyan tree within the temple grounds led to the name Wat Sai Thong. Wat Benchamabophit Dusit Wanaram is globally recognized as "The Marble Temple" because its ubosot (ordination hall) and corridors are adorned with the finest marble from Italy. The temple is also a splendid example of ancient Thai architectural art, attracting numerous Thai and international tourists every day who come to admire its beauty.
