ฉะเชิงเทรา มาจากคำภาษาเขมร 2 คำ คือ สทึง+เจรา ซึ่ง สทึง แปลว่า แม่น้ำสายย่อย และ เจรา แปลว่า ลึก เมื่อรวมความหมายก็ได้ว่า แม่น้ำลึก ซึ่งหมายถึงแม่น้ำบางปะกงนั่นเอง
