Brief History
ในอดีตมีชื่อเรียกดินแดนแถบนี้หลายชื่อ เช่น ในคัมภีร์มหานิเทศของอินเดีย ที่เขียนขึ้นราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 7-8 เรียกว่า "ตามพรลิงก์" หรืออาณาจักรตามพรลิงก์, บันทึกโบราณของเมืองจีนเรียก "เซี้ยะ-โท้ว (ถู-กวั่ว) ", "รักตะมฤติกา" (จารึกภาษาสันสกฤต) ซึ่งล้วนหมายถึง "ดินแดนที่มีดินสีแดง", ตะวันตกนิยมเรียกกันมา จนกระทั่งต้นคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 20 คือ "ลิกอร์" สันนิษฐานว่าชาวโปรตุเกสที่เข้ามาติดต่อค้าขายในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาตอนต้น เป็นผู้เรียกก่อน โดยเพี้ยนมาจากคำว่า "นคร" ส่วนชื่อ "นครศรีธรรมราช" มาจากพระนามของกษัตริย์ผู้ครองนครในอดีต มีพระนามว่า "พระเจ้าศรีธรรมาโศกราช" (ราชวงศ์ศรีธรรมาโศกราช) มีความหมายว่า "นครอันเป็นสง่าแห่งพระราชาผู้ทรงธรรม" หรือ "เมืองแห่งพุทธธรรมของพระราชาผู้ยิ่งใหญ่"
