ตราดนับเป็นเมืองศูนย์กลางการค้าแห่งหนึ่งในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ในช่วงปลายอยุธยา สินค้าที่ส่งออกขายยังแดนไกล โดยเฉพาะของป่า เช่น เขากวาง หนังสัตว์ ไม้หอม และเครื่องเทศต่าง ๆ ล้วนมาจากเขตป่าเขาชายฝั่งทะเลตะวันออก
