The Si Nakhon Tao Sanctuary, or Rattanaburi town, was originally a village named "Bungwai" or "Wai Village." This name arose because the area was abundant with rattans, which the local residents utilized for household purposes. The term "Bung" is a local dialect from that time, meaning a place where water seeps continuously. Located to the north of today's town, locals once cultivated rice there, creating vast fields they referred to as "Bung." Various animal species thrived in that era, including turtles, which could often be seen crawling about. Before the establishment of a permanent city, the area of Turtle Town was inhabited by the Khmer during their period of power, as evidenced by various archaeological remnants.

The deity of the Stone Gate, known as "Phra Ya Mue Lek," hails from Ban Ta, which is now known as Ban Wat in Ngao District, Lampang. Orphaned from a young age, he became a monk and studied under the abbot of Wat Nai Yang in Mae Tha, Lampang. He learned the art of invincibility and was able to use his arm as a shield. Upon leaving the monkhood, the villagers referred to him as "Naan Khom Mue Lek," or "the Man with the Iron Arm."
