วัดไชยวัฒนาราม อยู่รอบนอกของเกาะเมืองออกไปเล็กน้อย ตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา วัดแห่งนี้สร้างขึ้นสมัยพระเจ้าปราสาททอง เพื่ออุทิศพระราชกุศลถวายให้พระราชมารดา และใช้จัดพิธีถวายพระเพลิงศพในพระมหากษัตริย์เกือบทุกพระองค์ของอยุธยา และเพื่อเป็นอนุสรณ์แห่งชัยชนะเหนือกรุงละแวก (พนมเปญ) โดยจำลองแบบมาจากปราสาทนครวัด สิ่งที่น่าสนใจคือ ปรางค์ประธานที่ตั้งอยู่บริเวณตรงกลางของพื้น รายล้อมด้วยปรางค์บริวาร อีก 4 องค์

ถึง พ.ศ. 1896 จึงโปรดให้สร้างวัดนี้ขึ้นเป็นพระราชอนุสรณ์ ณ ตำบลซึ่งพระองค์เสด็จมาตั้งมั่นอยู่แต่เดิม และพระมหากษัตริย์องค์ต่อๆ มาก็คงจะได้โปรดให้สร้างถาวรวัตถุเพิ่มเติมขึ้นอีกหลายอย่าง เมื่อเสียกรุงศรีอยุธยา ในปี พ.ศ. 2310 วัดพุทไธศวรรย์ก็เป็นอีกวัดหนึ่งที่มิได้ถูกทำลายเหมือนวัดอื่นๆ 

ทุกวันนี้จึงยังมีโบราณสถานไว้ให้ชม มีโบราณสถานหลงเหลืออยู่หลายอย่าง เช่น ปรางค์องค์ใหญ่ พระอุโบสถ พระวิหาร และวิหารพระนอน ซึ่งสร้างมาตั้งแต่กรุงศรีอยุธยายังมีปรากฏอยู่ที่วัดนี้อีกด้วย ที่ผนังตำหนักพระเจ้าอู่ทอง มีภาพเขียนเรื่องทศชาติชาดกกับเรื่องสมเด็จพระพุทธโฆษาจารย์ ไปนมัสการพระพุทธรูปที่ลังกาทวีป ภาพเหล่านี้ฝีมืองามมากแต่น่าเสียดายที่ลบเลือนไปเกือบหมดแล้ว 

ที่มุขเด็จพระปรางค์องค์ใหญ่มีพระเจ้าอู่ทอง รูปพระเจ้าอู่ทองนี้เดิมทำเป็นเทวรูปในรัชกาลที่ 1 เมื่อ พ.ศ.2327 พระเจ้าลูกยาเธอกรมหมื่นเทพพลภักดิ์ ซึ่งบัญชาการกรมพระคชบาลเสด็จออกไปซ่อมเพนียดที่พระนครศรีอยุธยาทรงเข้าพบ จึงกราบทูลพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลก จึงโปรดให้เชิญเทวรูปนั้นลงมากรุงเทพฯแล้วโปรดให้หล่อแปลงใหม่เป็นพระพุทธรูปทรงเครื่องหุ้มเงินทั้งองค์ และโปรดให้ประดิษฐานไว้ ณ หอพระเทพบิดร ส่วนรูปที่เรียกกันว่า พระเจ้าอู่ทอง ในปัจจุบันเป็นของหล่อขึ้นใหม่แทนของเดิมที่เป็นพระพุทธรูปทรงเครื่องยืนตรงมุขข้างปรางค์ไม่ได้ตั้งอยู่ ณ ที่เดิม วัดนี้ได้ปฏิสังขรณ์ยอดปรางค์ครั้งหนึ่งในรัชกาลที่ 5 เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2441
