หรือที่นิยมเรียกสั้น ๆ ว่า วัดสุทัศน์ เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นเอก ชนิดราชวรมหาวิหาร ที่มีอยู่เพียงไม่กี่แห่งของประเทศไทย และถือเป็นวัดประจำรัชกาลของพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรมหาอานันทมหิดล พระอัฐมรามาธิบดินทร(รัชกาลที่ 8) เป็นวัดที่ตั้งอยู่ในเขตพระนครชั้นใน และอยู่มีสิ่งก่อสร้างที่โดดเด่นคือ เสาชิงช้า อยู่บริเวณหน้าวัด

ในต้นยุคกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช รัชกาลที่ 1 โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้มีการสร้างวัดขึ้นในพื้นที่พระนครชั้นใน ในปี พ.ศ. 2350 เดิมพระราชทานนามว่า “วัดมหาสุทธาวาส” โดยมีพื้นที่ตั้งอยู่ในดงสะแก เป็นที่ลุ่มจึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ถมที่และสร้างเป็นวัด และโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างพระวิหารขึ้นก่อนเพื่อประดิษฐานพระศรีศากยมุนี (พระโต) ซึ่งอัญเชิญมาจากพระวิหารหลวงวัดมหาธาตุ จังหวัดสุโขทัย แต่สิ้นรัชกาลก่อนที่จะประดิษฐานเป็นสังฆาราม จึงเรียกกันว่า วัดพระโต, วัดพระใหญ่ หรือวัดเสาชิงช้าบ้าง
