Thawornwathu Building (Red Building)

The road in front of Wat Phra That and the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

The striking building, with its distinctive three-tiered design, stands along the road in front of the Phra That, near Sanam Luang. It invites visitors to explore its beauty and is known as the "Thaworn Watthuwat" or more commonly as the "Red Building." Originally, this structure served as the National Library, established under King Rama V on October 12, 1905, intended as a place of learning for monks of the Maha Nikaya sect. Later, the king graciously founded Mahathat College at Wat Mahathat Yuwaratrangsarit. Today, this venue has transformed into an exhibition space showcasing the royal history and achievements during the reign of King Rama V. The exhibition is divided into seven sections: 1. **"Piyamaharaja Room"**: This area displays significant historical narratives, images of the royal achievements, and quotes from royal addresses on various occasions. 2. **"Rajakieng Pracha Room"**: Here, the focus is on the royal initiatives that promoted equality among Thai citizens, particularly the abolition of slavery, which liberated the Thai populace. 3. **"Thamrong Ekarach Room"**: This section presents the royal foreign diplomacy efforts that helped Thailand navigate through political crises during the colonial era. 4. **"Siam Mai Room"**: Visitors can learn about the foundational public utilities established during this period, which were crucial for the nation's development. 5. **"Siamese Architectural Heritage Room"**: This area features 3D models of five significant architectural landmarks constructed during King Rama V's reign. 6. **"World Memory Heritage Room"**: This section showcases historical documents related to King Chulalongkorn's developments and reforms in Thailand from 1868 to 1910, recognized as a World Memory Heritage by UNESCO in 2009. Visitors can read various historical texts via an electronic book system. 7. **"Piyamaharaja Remembrance"**: This final area exhibits rare personal photographs of the king, making it a unique highlight of the visit. Be sure to stop by the gift shop to pick up mementos, such as postcards depicting Thailand’s historical events. **Location**: Front of Phra That, Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang, Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok. Open Wednesday to Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday, as well as public holidays) from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is free. For more information, please call 0 2222 4867 or 0 2221 6830.
