Wat Phra That Pha Ngao is located on the west bank of the Mekong River, opposite Laos, in the village of Sop Kham, in the Wiang sub-district of Chiang Saen district, Chiang Rai province. Covering an area of 743 rai, most of the land consists of small hills that stretch down from Ban Jam Phee, passing through Ban Doi Jan, and finally ending at Ban Sop Kham. Previously, the locals referred to this hill as "Doi Kham," but in recent years they've started calling it "Doi Jan." In 1976, the area around the temple was renovated, which involved excavating large tree stumps and uncovering ancient bricks arranged in a row. When the bricks were removed, a mask was found underneath. Upon lifting the mask, a Buddha statue was revealed. Experts in antiquities estimated that the statue could be around 700 to 1,300 years old, leading to the name "Luang Por Pha Ngao" for the statue unearthed during the excavation. It is speculated that this temple was once an important site in the old capital; the Buddha statue was likely buried beneath the larger statue to conceal it from thieves seeking ancient artifacts.
