Wat Nang Phaya, Phitsanulok

Wat Nang Phaya, Phitsanulok

Phitsanulok, the city of Phitsanulok.

Wat Nang Phaya is an important temple well-known among the masters of amulets because it houses the revered Nang Phaya, one of the most sought-after relics in the Benja Pakhi set. The first discovery of these amulets was in 1901, followed by another in 1954. The Nang Phaya amulet is famously associated with potent sacredness and is particularly noted for its powers of compassion and charm. It is especially favored by women in leadership roles who oversee a large number of subordinates. There is a belief that possessing a Nang Phaya amulet grants a sense of respect and reverence from those under one’s care, akin to the reverence shown to a queen. Furthermore, it is speculated that the temple was established by Queen Visutthikaya, the principal consort of King Mahathammaracha, also known as Khun Phirenrathep, who was the mother of King Si Suphan Kanya, King Naresuan the Great, and King Ekatotsarot. This was during the time when King Mahathammaracha ruled Phitsanulok as a royal son-in-law of King Mahachakrapat, the sovereign of Ayutthaya, from 1548 to 1569. The temple is named "Wat Nang Phaya" because Queen Visutthikaya held a status in Phitsanulok that surpassed everyone else in the northern region, much like a queen bee reigning over all other bees. This distinction likely explains the name "Wat Nang Phaya."
