Wat Thera Plai

Wang Nam Sub District, Si Prachan District.

This ancient temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period, evidenced by its historic brick chedi topped with an old bronze prang, characteristic of a seven-tiered lotus flower. It is believed that the temple was named after an event involving King Naresuan the Great, who conducted the famous battle at Don Chedi. It was here that a notable general paused to rest his troops and elephants before continuing their journey to Ban Nong Sarai. This led to the temple being known as Wat Ther Plai, which translates to “the elephant of the noble general.” Before embarking on the battle, King Naresuan the Great commissioned the creation of a statue of Phra Khunphan to serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement for his soldiers; part of these statues was enshrined within the chedi of Wat Ther Plai.
