Naval Battle Memorial at Koh Chang

Sukhumvit 3 Road, Koh Chang, South Koh Chang.

The Naval Heroes Memorial commemorates the valor of the Thai Navy during the crucial naval battle at Koh Chang on January 17, 1941. This date marks a significant maritime conflict between Thailand and France, recognized as one of the most important naval engagements in the history of the Royal Thai Navy. Every year, the Navy observes this day to honor and pay respect to the 36 brave sailors who sacrificed their lives to preserve Thailand's independence and sovereignty. During that fateful encounter, the French deployed seven vessels, including the formidable cruiser Lamotte-Picquet, which alone displaced 9,350 tons. They were supported by two additional sloops and four gunboats. In contrast, the Thai Navy faced this overwhelming force with only three ships: HTMS Thonburi, HTMS Songkhla, and HTMS Chonburi, placing them at a distinct disadvantage. However, the steadfast spirit and courage of our naval ancestors shone through as they bravely executed their duties until all three ships met their tragic fate, sinking into the depths of the Trat Sea alongside 36 fallen officers and crew members. The memorial is located at the coast of Laem Ngob, featuring the statue of Prince Chumphon Khet Udomsak, facing the site of the battle at Koh Chang. The area and the museum are designed to resemble a warship, where various historical exhibits detail the life of Prince Chumphon, along with the accounts of the Thai Navy's confrontations with the French forces. Every January 17, Trat Province organizes an event commemorating the naval heroes. The highlights of this event include a ceremony to honor the spirit of Admiral Prince Chumphon and an elaborate floating ceremony of flower garlands at Koh Lim, conducted by naval ships. Visitors are welcome to participate in these ceremonies. For more information, please contact the Laem Ngob District Office at 0 3951 0491. To reach the memorial, start from the intersection at Laem Ngob District, drive straight for about 1 kilometer, turn right into the alley next to a seaside restaurant, and continue straight for another 500 meters. The destination will be on your left.
