Residang Kamport Ancient Ruins

Main Street, Bang Phra, Trat City

The Residan Kampot Ancient Monument is a significant wooden structure in Trat Province. It was built during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) by Phra Pranee Chin Pracha, the Chinese district officer of Trat, to serve as a residence for his daughter, named Sud, alongside Luang Worabat Phakdee, the mayor of Trat at that time. In 1899, when Phraya Narachachaiwut (Chao Wang Iem), the governor of Trat, retired, he moved into this house. When the French occupied Trat in 1904, they intended to seize this building for administrative purposes. However, upon discovering it belonged to a local citizen, they opted not to take it. After Phraya Narachachaiwut no longer resided there, the French took over the property, renovated it, added a balcony, and used it as the residence of "Residan de Ferinsimang," a French commissioner tasked by the French government to govern Trat from 1904 to 1907. Locals subsequently referred to this house as "Juan Residan." In addition to its historical significance, the Juan Residan Kampot features beautiful architectural characteristics that reflect the design style of the period. It is a three-story building, blending brick and wooden construction, topped with a tiered wooden roof covered with tiles. The lower floor comprises brick construction, while the front area is an open courtyard with a brick wall enclosing it. The upper levels are surrounded by railings and have two entrances located on the east and south sides. An external staircase leads up to the second floor, which serves as a balcony before entering the interior rooms. The second and third floors have horizontally laid wooden boards and large double-opening windows to allow for ventilation. The Fine Arts Department has officially registered the Residan Kampot Ancient Monument in the Royal Gazette, Volume 105, Issue 188, dated November 16, 1988. The area of the monument spans approximately 1 rai (about 1,600 square meters). **Location:** Situated in the main street community, Bang Phra Sub-District, Mueang Trat District, Trat Province. **Getting There:** Start from the Trat Municipal Market, head towards the Main Square intersection, and turn left. Continue straight for about 500 meters, and the building will be on your left. **Inquiries:** Call 0 3959 7259 ***Note: Currently, the Residan Kampot Ancient Monument is closed for renovations with no specified date for reopening.
