The world's largest carved Buddha statue, with a lap width of 65 meters and height of 84 meters, is named Somdet Phra Buddha Pusyakiri Sri Suvarnabhumi, or Luang Por U Thong in the meditation pose; it represents U-Thong art style. The Fine Arts Department confirms that this site marks the beginning of the spread of Buddhism in the Suvarnabhumi region. Archaeological evidence shows that Emperor Ashoka of India sent out nine missionary streams to propagate Buddhism, with the eighth stream, led by Phra Sona and Phra Uttara, arriving in the Suvarnabhumi region in the early 3rd century AD. This is where traces of Buddhism were found in U-Thong. Emperor Ashoka also constructed numerous monasteries, such as the Pusyakiri Sangharama in the Kalinga region. Interestingly, the name echoes the inscription "Pusyakiri," as noted in the stone inscription "Pusyakiri" and the Dharma Wheel atop the Ashoka pillar near the Khao Tham Thian Mountain, close to the location of the Buddha carving. It is possible that the names in the inscriptions were brought by the two missionaries to honor their homeland.
