The Chiang Rai City Pillar, or "Sao Sadu Mueang," serves as a landmark or symbol of the establishment of the community and the city. In Chiang Rai Province, the city pillar is referred to as Sao Sadu Mueang. This particular Chiang Rai City Pillar was constructed in the year 1987, to commemorate the 60th birthday of His Majesty King Rama IX and to honor the great merit of Phaya Mengrai, the founder of Chiang Rai. The pillar was unveiled during the celebration of the 725th anniversary of the city's founding. It is located at a site known as Doi Chom Thong.
