Chiang Rai province is a significant place in the history of Thailand, with a wealth of stories recorded from this ancient kingdom. It is considered one of the important historical eras in early Thai history, especially in relation to territorial politics, governance, culture, and its rulers. Anyone who has studied the history of Chiang Rai must have heard of King Mengrai, or Phra Khun Mengrai. In addition to the Hall of the Three Kings monument, the Mengrai Tomb (Goo Phra Khun Mengrai) is another important memorial site as it houses the relics of Phra Khun Mengrai Maharat, the former ruler of this land. The Mengrai Tomb is located in front of Wat Ngam Mueang on the Ngam Mueang Mountain. According to historical records, after King Mengrai bestowed the throne upon his son, King Saen Phu, to rule over Chiang Mai, he brought his father's remains to reside in Chiang Rai. He graciously commissioned the construction of the tomb to enshrine his father's remains at Ngam Mueang Mountain, which is known as the Mengrai Tomb today.
